About Guardian Comics
Guardian Comics is an independent publisher of comic books and graphic novels, based in Perth, Western Australia. We're passionate about creating stories with substance and heart, and about making sure as many people as possible can read them. Every comic in our library is free to read online, with closed captions, panel-by-panel reading and descriptions for screen readers.
Where it started
In 2003 there was no Guardian Comics, just a webcomic called Make with the Funny and the ambition to make something of it. Around a hundred strips were released online before the stories grew to the point where they could be bound into issues and taken to print. The series was renamed Clutching at Straws for that move.
Soon after the first issue was independently published and stocked in local comic book shops, it was clear the library needed more variety. Guardian Comics was created to bring all of the different titles together under one roof.
The comics
The Tales of Alex & Fez. A story about a lonely boy, his quest for adventure and the discovery of an unexpected best friend to share them with.
Clutching at Straws. Defying the subdued convention of a town too small for their antics, our troupe tumble and limp from one bizarre adventure to another. Fun times? You betcha!
The Dark Treaty. Eighteen years ago, shadow creatures called the Dentark rose from the ground and enslaved humanity. Now the survivors face one question: what comes next?
Comics for every reader
Our reader grew out of ComicA11y, Paul Spencer's experiment at Humaan in an all-inclusive online comic reading experience, which was named a Webby Honoree for Technical Achievement in 2021. Read more about how accessible reading works here.
Paul Spencer
Paul Spencer is the artist behind Guardian Comics. He loves telling stories and drawing pictures, so comic books were a natural progression. Paul scripts, pencils, inks, colours and letters the comics in the library, and he loves every step.
